The basic strategy chart
Find your hand in the left column and the dealer’s up-card along the top. Pairs use the pairs table; a hand with an ace counted as 11 uses the soft table; everything else uses the hard table.

Rules this chart assumes
- Four to eight decks, shuffled together.
- The dealer stands on all 17s, including soft 17 (S17).
- You may double on any first two cards, and after a split.
- No surrender; blackjack pays 3 to 2.
If a table’s rules differ — the dealer hits soft 17, the dealer takes no hole card, or blackjack pays 6 to 5 — a few plays and the house edge change. A 6-to-5 payout alone adds about 1.4% to the house edge. Read the table rules before you play.
Blackjack in the MEGA63 lobby
On 28 September 2026 the studio catalogues in the MEGA63 lobby included 28 titles with “blackjack” in the name, from 9 studios, led by Playtech (13), Play’n GO (4) and Habanero (3). Each title sets its own rules — number of decks, soft 17, payouts and side bets — so open its rules panel and compare it with the list above before playing.

Common mistakes the trainer catches
- Standing on 12 against a dealer 2 or 3. The chart hits: the dealer is less likely to bust with a 2 or 3 than with a 4, 5 or 6.
- Not splitting 8s. Sixteen is the weakest total in blackjack; two hands that start with 8 do better against every up-card under these rules.
- Splitting 10s. Twenty already wins most hands; keep it.
- Standing on soft 18 against a 9, 10 or ace. The chart hits, because 18 loses too often to those cards.
- Taking insurance. Insurance is a side bet on the dealer’s blackjack and is not part of basic strategy.
- Not doubling 11 against a 10. With four to eight decks and the dealer standing on soft 17, 11 doubles against everything except an ace.
Common questions about blackjack basic strategy
Does basic strategy guarantee a win?
No. Basic strategy gives the best long-run result for each hand and lowers the house edge to about 0.5% under these rules, but any session can still lose. Set a limit before you play.
Should I always split 8s and aces?
Under these rules, yes: a pair of 8s and a pair of aces are split against every dealer card. A pair of 10s is never split, and a pair of 5s is played as a hard 10.
When should I double down on 11?
Against a dealer 2 to 10. Against an ace, hit — that is the play with four to eight decks when the dealer stands on soft 17.
What does soft 17 mean?
A hand of 17 that counts an ace as 11, such as ace and 6. Where the dealer hits soft 17 instead of standing, a few plays change and the house edge rises by about 0.2%.
Does basic strategy work in online blackjack?
Yes, if the online game uses the same rules. Most online blackjack games shuffle after every hand, so card counting does not help there, but basic strategy still lowers the house edge.
Before you play
Check the table rules against the list on this page, set a limit for the session, and do not raise bets to win back a loss. Basic strategy lowers the house edge; it does not remove it.
